Kettlebells for MMA Strikers and Boxers
August 5, 2008 | Leave a Comment
For any combat martial artist, including boxers, stamina and strength are, of course, necessities. However, the sport of kettlebell lifting can be as beneficial, if not more, than traditional weight training in improving overall strength. Let me expand on that for a second before we get into any specific kettlebell exercises for boxers.
With weight training, there are benefits and increases in raw strength. That’s a fact. But with boxing and other combat arts, the emphasis on functional strength should be paramount. Conventional weight training as opposed to kettlebell training is more of a collection of static movements and exercises where you may be locked in a fixed position or a machine. There are not any sport-specific exercises that I’ve seen that you can do with a dumbbell or barbell as far as boxing goes.
Conventional weight training is perfect if your chosen sport is powerlifting or bodybuilding. However, when you need explosive, coordinated, dynamic strength and agility, especially in the extreme ranges of the motion, kettlebell training is just what the doctor ordered.

MMA Bulletin Picks for UFC 87: Seek and Destroy

Jon Fitch over George St. Pierre
May or may not happen this way, but I love Fitch, even though I still think GSP is one of the PfP best, and I don’t think Fitch is quite there yet. Still, Fitch in 2 or 3.
Brock Lesnar over Heath Herring
Not since a split decision over Gan McGee back in the start of 04 has the “Crazy Horse” fought someone bigger than him, and he’s never fought anyone this powerful. Herring is exposed on the ground, as Brock puts on a wrestling clinic and takes the “Texas Lazy Horse” by decision.
Kenny Florian over Roger Huerta
Easily the best fight of the night, and if I could get out of picking a winner here I’d do it. Either man could be argued as the best in the weight class. When it’s all said and done, “KenFlo” finishes fights (just ask him), and, while I don’t think he’s going to “finish” Huerta, I do think he will win.

Jon Fitch; really? Jon Fitch; really!
August 4, 2008 | Leave a Comment
The other day I was minding my own business when I overheard a conversation between two casual MMA fans. I was partially listening, and partially reading a book, but I almost had to perform the Heimlich maneuver on myself after swallowing my coffee in a painful manner when I heard the following statement; “I don’t know why Jon Fitch is even getting a title shot. I mean, He’s been in the UFC for a few years and hasn’t really beat anybody. I think Dana White just needed someone for GSP to whoop up on.” Now, I consider myself to be quite knowledgeable when it comes to MMA, but likewise, I have no problem shutting my trap and letting others voice their own knowledge of the sport, but this is one occasion where I almost had to chime in and verbally layeth the smack down, as the saying goes. I didn’t butt in, but I do, however, hope that the two young men in question stumble onto this article.

2. Ultimate Fighting Championship
Bluntly speaking, the UFC is responsible for bringing the sport of MMA to the masses, which increased its revenue, which allowed them to pay more fighters more money, which increased the talent level, which produces better fights, which keeps bringing in new and previous viewers alike, which is responsible for increasing revenue, which…get the picture? It’s a continuous cycle, and until that circle is broken by someone’s greed or stupidity, the trend will continue.

August 4, 2008 | Leave a Comment
There may be no other sport that is as confused about their training than combative sports. With the immense growth of the UFC, Pride, and other MMA associations, fighters and their coaches have embraced modern strength and conditioning. Coaches still often fall into some very common traps:
