P4P Arguments
August 1, 2008 |
Fedor Emelianenko - Arguably the best fighter of all time. Fedor better secured his argument with his quick work of Tim Silvia. Randy Couture failed to finish Tim Silvia when he won the title from him. In Silvia’s fight against Nogueira Tim put on a good show up until Nogueira was able to secure the submission. Fedor finished Silvia in less than a minute erasing criticism that he had not beat a high caliber fighter in some time.
Randy Couture - As previously stated Randy looked excellent and maybe the best ever in his manhandling of Tim Silvia. Randy did not finish Silvia but however did beat him up and down the cage. Against Gonzaga Randy again proved that he was the champ in beating the man that will forever be know for his knockout of Mirko Cro Cop.
Anderson Silva - Franklin 2x, Nate Marquardt, Travis Lutter, Dan Henderson, Chris Leben, and James Irvin, all these fighters fell to the Spider in his reign of dominance in the UFC. First the Spider dismantled a game Chris Leben in his debut. He knocked out a fighter who was known for his ability to slug and take a hit. Then he dismantled Franklin in a title fight. Keep in mind Franklin had been on a big winning spree and had looked very good standing up till this point.
When Travis Lutter got his shot the champ submitted the ju-jitsu wizard striking fear into all Middleweights hearts. Spider went on to defend against Nate Marquardt then submitted Dan Henderson who had beaten Wanderlei Silva and lasted 5 rounds with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. The spider was not yet done he went on the knock out James Irvin who had been on a rise over his last fights in the UFC. A good test at middleweight may be in WEC champ Paulo Filho. Past Filho who knows who can beat the spider. Truly it is not a great time to be a Middleweight in the UFC.
BJ Penn - The Hawaiian has looked excellent at Lightweight. Not his physical ability allows him to show all of his potential. Against Jens Pulver, Penn dominated a revamped former champ and did it with what looked like relative ease. Penn looked even better against Joe Stevenson. In that fight the Champ showed his skill beating a fighter who had submitted most of his opponents on his way to a title shot.
Georges St. Pierre - GSP beat Hughes and Serra in excellent fashion. Also the Welterweight out wrestled Josh Koscheck, who was an NCAA champion in wrestling. Right now the future looks bright as GSP now has the mental ability along with the physical.
Forrest Griffin - Griffin no longer can be ignored with consecutive wins against Rampage and Shogun. Griffin has looked more controlled and more technically sound with every coming fight. The current champ never fails to put on a show. Look for fights in the future to test the champ and his title. With stars like the Shogun, Rampage, the Axe Murderer, the Iceman, Machida, Evans, and Thiago Silva no title defense will be easy.
Urijah Faber - The California Kid has demolished any competition that has step foot in the cage with him. Faber submitted Jeff Curran whose ju-jitsu is top notch. Then the California Kid went on to destroy Jens Pulver. While many may say Pulver was not the same as he was they are right. The Featherweight Jens Pulver was the best Pulver the world has seen. As of right now Faber is overlooked in the P4P rankings mostly because of his weight class. Look for Faber to beat anyone who stands in his way.
Miguel Torres - Real quick the Bantamweight, while overlooked in the P4P rankings may be one of the best rounded fighters in the world. He showed excellent ju-jitsu in his successful run at the title submitting a Chase Beebe who had gone 5 rounds with Abu Dhabi champ Rhani Yahya. In Torres’s last fight he showed tough stand up and looks to only get better.
