UFC 87: Seek and Destroy

Jon Fitch over George St. Pierre
May or may not happen this way, but I love Fitch, even though I still think GSP is one of the PfP best, and I don’t think Fitch is quite there yet. Still, Fitch in 2 or 3.

Brock Lesnar over Heath Herring
Not since a split decision over Gan McGee back in the start of 04 has the “Crazy Horse” fought someone bigger than him, and he’s never fought anyone this powerful. Herring is exposed on the ground, as Brock puts on a wrestling clinic and takes the “Texas Lazy Horse” by decision.

Kenny Florian over Roger Huerta
Easily the best fight of the night, and if I could get out of picking a winner here I’d do it. Either man could be argued as the best in the weight class. When it’s all said and done, “KenFlo” finishes fights (just ask him), and, while I don’t think he’s going to “finish” Huerta, I do think he will win.

Manny Gamburyan over Rob Emerson
Emerson doesn’t have the mean streak it will take to get by this little spark plug. When you consider the fact that Manny has sparred with Karo Parisyan most of his life, I like the chances of “The Anvil.”

Jason MacDonald over Demian Maia
While Maia has fought and beat some pretty tough opponents, MacDonald’s last three losses have come against guys who are a combined 57-11 (Rich Franklin, Yushin Okami, Patrick Cote). YOWZAS! That’s respectable, ya think? Also, I think the fact that Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald has been in 22 more MMA fights than Maia will play a role. Mac is just too long, slippery, and athletic for the submission machine, Maia.

Tamdan McCrory over Luke Cummo
It’s sad for me to see a quality fighter and a good guy like Cummo not be able to put anything together, and his woes continue as “The Barn Cat” will more than likely knock his lights out early, either in the first or second round, even though his last two wins have come via submission. Nightie-night Luke.

Cheick Kongo over Dan Evensen
If kicking the snot out of Mirko “Cro Cop” was the highlight of Kongo’s career, then giving up in the last round against the severely over-matched “Lazy Horse” (see above) and losing by decision has to be the low-light. Watching Kongo’s career is like watching a little boy play with a puzzle, he just can’t put all the pieces together, but because Evensen’s wins come against a few guys found at the local VFW bingo hall, I have to give this one to Cheick over the big guy. This one might not even air.

Steve Bruno over Chris Wilson
Hard one to call since Bruno has KO power and is on a 4-fight win streak, but Chris Wilson has hung tough and lost by decisions many times. I’ll go with Bruno because I think Wilson is still mind-screwed over being dominated by Jon Fitch earlier this year.

Ben Saunders over Ryan Thomas
Ben Saunders against who? If this is the Ryan Thomas I’m thinking of, then he’s 9-1 against some pretty ho-hum tallent. He’s won a few bar fights and his only loss came after he lost his cardio and gave up a careless armbar in the third round to a decent fighter (not great, but decent). If Thomas’ opponents were drunks at the local bar, then Saunders opponents must have been stock boys at the local Wal-Mart who were caught running from those drunks. He’s only fought one legitimate fighter, minus the T.U.F. crowd. I like Saunders because he can take a punch, and he’s funny, so I say he’ll win a snor-fest, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Thomas lands an overhand right and clocks Saunders the heck out. This thing reeks of something thrown together at the last minute. Maybe someone can see if Thomas can bring the nachos and Saunders can bring the beer so it isn’t a total waste of our time.
