Evan Tanner Found Dead in California Mountains

Today is a sad day for the MMA community. The body of UFC legend and former middleweight champion Evan Tanner was found in the Palo Verde mountain area. Friends and family reported Tanner missing on Saturday after leaving numerous calls and text messages without any response. Information is still scarce on the actual cause of death or how long he was out there. Tanner was 37 years old.
MMA fans will remember Evan Tanner as not only a legend of the sport, but also as one of the most interesting characters the sport has ever seen. Tanner posted a professional record of 32 wins and 8 losses over his 11 year career. His biggest MMA accomplishment came in 2005 when he defeated David Terrell to capture the vacant UFC middleweight championship. However, Tanner’s personal life has had its ups and downs. Tanner had been battling with an addiction to alcohol for quite some time. He also sunk his boat off the California shore nearly a year ago. However, Tanner seemed to be getting his life back on track. He signed a multi-fight contract late last year. Unfortunately, he lost the first two fights on his comeback. He was knocked out by Yushin Okami in March at UFC 82, and then he dropped a split decision to Kendall Grove at Ultimate Fight Night in June. He then decided to take some time off and let some nagging injuries heal.
Evan Tanner will be remembered as a great adventurer. He loved the outdoors and had a zest for life like no one else. The man had done more traveling and had more experiences in his short existence than most people will ever have in a lifetime. Most true MMA fans will remember Evan for memorable performances, the heart he showed inside the cage, and his desire to win. Evan Tanner will truly be missed.
