Cung Le; A Story of Dominance
August 17, 2008 |

Saigon; a word, a vision, a meaning synonymous with a war in which so many say we didn’t belong. The savagery and violence experienced in this city can be matched only by few unfortunate cities, and in it, living within its bowels, were a people being used as human shields. The fall of this city marked a new day in our world, not to mention the beginning of the end of a bloody era. Three days before the fall of this apocalyptic purgatory a three-year old Vietnamese boy escaped the clutches of the city’s hell. This boy; soon to be one of the worlds best fighters; this boy; Cung Le.
Le and his mother made their way to the U.S. where he was forced to fight naysayers and bullies for his everyday survival. When he was 10, the oft ridiculed Le took up Tae kwon do, and the rest is history, albeit a history many MMA fans do not know. The name Cung Le is one that the mainstream MMA fan may not recognize, hence, discount his skills and accomplishments. When the term “pound for pound best” is thrown around so haphazardly, fighters like Le, especially Le, are shunned from this list in favor of more well-known, mainstream fighters such as Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre. Soon, hopefully, those same fans will know the history of the warrior that is Cung Le.Le, the Strikeforce Middleweight champion, is a fighter who has yet to taste defeat.
A San Shou expert, Le is undefeated in his kickboxing efforts with a staggering record of 17-0 with 12 knock outs. His MMA career is similarly spotless, even if less accomplished. Le sports a 6-0 MMA record, with all six wins coming by way of knock out. Le is also a well-versed wrestler, which many are not aware of. Le, a junior in high school, was an All-American as a wrestler and while attending West Valley Junior College in California Le became a California State wrestling champ. With that being said, and as with the mighty glacier, those who only see the obvious are only seeing the surface. As far as MMA victories go, most recently Le dominated MMA legend Frank Shamrock. The fight ended as a result of Shamrock not being able to compete due to a broken arm, which by the way was suffered because of Le’s devastating kicks.
When an MMA legend is dominated so thoroughly, as Shamrock was by Le, the sport takes notice. When the dominating fighter stands undefeated in combat sports with a combined record of 23-0, the fans takes notice. The sport has taken notice, the MMA fans have taken notice, and now, the world has been put on notice; Cung Le is here. In fact, he’s always been right here.
